May 22, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny is discharging his duties as First Vice President and also as SPLM-IO leader from his home where he is quarantined, his media official said.

Machar last week tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory sickness caused by the novel coronavirus, along his wife Angelina Teny who is also the South Sudan’s Minister of Defense and Veterans’ Affairs.

Several other senior government officials who were with Machar in the former coronavirus taskforce committee have all contracted the virus as well.  This is with the exception of the country’s health minister.

Speaking to Radio Miraya this evening, James Gatdet Dak, the Press Secretary in the Office of the First Vice President, said Machar was discharging his duties at home where he is being quarantined and his physical absence from the office will not affect his work as the country’s First Vice President.

“The self-isolation of the First-Vice-President after he tested positive for COVID-19, is not affecting the running of government business,” Gatdet said.

On the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, Gatdet said “Dr. Machar completed negotiations on the allocation of states and the appointment of state leaders with the other parties, and submitted the SPLM-IO position to President Salva Kiir before isolation.”
