May 12, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s First Vice President and SPLM-IO leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, discussed – in a phone call on Tuesday – bilateral relations between Sudan and South Sudan with the leader of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudanese media reports.

Sudan’s state-owned Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported that al-Burhan spoke to Machar to discuss the peace process and the importance of bilateral relations between the two sisterly countries expressing his support for the newly formed unity government in the world’s youngest nation.

“The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Abdul Rahman, made a phone call to Dr. Riek Machar, the First Vice President of South Sudan,” the SUNA said quoting al-Burhan’s office.

“During the 45-minute phone call, the two leaders discussed the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement in South Sudan and the efforts to enhance cross-border security between the two countries,” it said.

Machar “further expressed the appreciation of the people and the government of South Sudan to the Sudanese government and people for helping restore peace and stability in the country.”

Separately, al-Burhan called South Sudan presidential advisor on security Tutkew Gatluak who is also the chief negotiator of the Sudanese peace talks being hosted by South Sudan. The two discussed peace and security in the two countries, according to SUNA.
