Latest: Kiir and Machar agree to form unity gov’t despite pending pre-transitional tasks

Dec 17th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the First-vice Designate, Dr. Riek Machar, have agreed during a consultative meeting, to format the long-awaited Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity despite unimplemented pre-transitional activities.

“The President of the Republic, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit and, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, who is the main opposition leader and a signatory to the Agreement, have agreed on a number of outstanding issues on the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement on Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan,” the Presidency announced this evening.

According to the presidency, “the two principles agreed to form the Revitalized transitional government of national unity by the end of the extended 100 days of pre transitional period regardless of the outstanding issues.”

During the meeting at the State House on Tuesday, the two leaders agreed to expedite the implementation of the R-ARCSS, and disburse enough funds to assist Internally Displaced Persons who have been in UNMISS camps across the country since 2013.

For his part, the opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar confirmed that they had agreed on the formation of the unity government and the implementation of the security arrangements by moving forces to cantonment areas.

“Dr. Riek Machar said, the issue of the States and their boundaries remains pending and they will sit again with the deputy President of South Africa David Mabuza who is a member of C5 countries to discuss the number of states and their boundaries,” the PPU said.

The Deputy Chairman of the Sudan Sovereign Council, General Mohamed Hamdan urged President Kiir and opposition leader Machar to focus on the implementation of the peace agreement.
