December 28th, 2019 (SSNN)—The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) – a consortium of investigative media and journalists, has criticized Kiir’s government for awarding millions of dollars to foreign contractors as the country’s military and civil servants go unpaid for nearly six months.

In a brief statement obtained by SSNN, the investigative reporters uncovered that the South Sudanese government spends a large amount of money on procurement contracts worth millions of dollars despite the ongoing economic hardships in the country.

“South Sudan’s gov’t employees haven’t been paid in months, a reflection of the country’s battered economy. But the dire situation has been aggravated by several inflated procurement contracts worth $1.4 billion awarded by the president’s office,” the group revealed today.

Over the past few months, South Sudan has been on the news for allegations of corruption and mismanagement of resources.

In September, The Sentry— a group of financial forensic investigators accused a Chinese-led multinational oil company of providing direct support to notorious militia groups and participating in illegal trade deals, fueling the conflict in South Sudan.
