Kiir will appoint governors next week – Makuei
June 19, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit will appoint state governors next week as parties are now preparing to submit names of respective nominees, a senior government official said today.
Information minister Michael Makuei Lueth told South Sudan News Now from Juba this morning that President Salva Kiir Mayardit is waiting for the list of SPLM-IO and South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) nominees and will appoint the governors next week.
He said the government list was ready and the president was only awaiting the opposition nominees.
“Well, the government is ready with its nominees,” Makuei said. “President Salva Kiir Mayardit is only waiting for the list of the SPLM-IO and that of South Sudan Opposition Alliance and the appointment will be next week, maybe Monday.”
President Kiir and main armed opposition group and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny reached an agreement on Wednesday at the state house in Juba and agreed to form the state governors.
The agreement gave the former ITGoNU six ministers, SPLM-IO three ministers, and South Sudan Opposition Alliance one minister.
The SSOA however said it will not accept the outcome of the meeting saying they want the governorship of Upper Nile state which it has long sought but has now been given to Machar’s SPLM-IO.
