Nov 29th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his accompanying delegation left Juba on Friday to attend the 13th Ordinary Summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government currently being held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

“The President of the Republic, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit and his accompanying delegation left Juba for the Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa, to attend IGAD summit which is expected to discuss the Revitalized Peace Agreement in South Sudan,” the Presidency confirmed this morning.

The East African regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), is expected to discuss, among other issues, the progress made in the implementation of the peace agreement, and lift restrictions imposed on South Sudan’s prominent opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar, a high-profile opposition figure who has been under house arrest since last year.

Earlier this month, the head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Special Representative of the Sectretary-General David Shearer, urged the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to release Dr. Riek Machar, and similarly called on South Sudan to issue a valid passport to Machar for the sake of peace and to put the country on the right path towards stability.
