Kiir gives SSOA until Saturday to agree on governor
July 3, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has given an ultimatum to the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) to either nominate a governor by Saturday afternoon, or he choose someone of his choice, according to a senior government official has said.
A deal between Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar Teny last week ended the four-month-old dispute between the parties to the revitalized peace agreement over the allocation of states and gave six states of Unity, Lakes, Warrap, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Central, and Eastern Equatoria.
Machar’s SPLM-IO was given three states of Upper Nile, Western Equatoria, and Western Bahr el Ghazal. South Sudan Opposition Alliance was given the state of Jonglei.
The SPLM-IO nominated its three governors including General Johnson Olony for Upper Nile state, but the Alliance disagreed on a nominee who was nominated by the leader of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) and Secretary-General of the Alliance, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin.
Kiir then rejected to appoint Olony for the governor for Upper Nile state but accepted so yesterday and promised to do so on Monday. He did not also appoint the NDM nominee for the Jonglei state.
Speaking to South Sudan News Now this morning, a senior government official said the president has written to the Alliance asking them to agree on a nominee by Saturday afternoon or else he will appoint someone of his choice.
“The president of the Republic has informed the SSOA that they have to nominate someone by Saturday afternoon or else he will appoint someone of his choice,” the official told South Sudan News Now from Juba.
“This is because the state cannot be held hostage by the disagreement in the Alliance. There is a need for a state leadership at the moment,” the official added.
