Kenya Powers commences relocation of power lines to pave way for Nairobi Expressway
Sep 24, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — The relocation of power lines between the Mlolongo through the city center to James Gichuru to pave way for the Nairobi expressway have commenced and it will cost 1.08 billion Kenya shillings.
According to the Kenya power director and CEO Bernard Ngugi, it is the Kenya National Highways that will foot the bill.
The CEO said that it is keen on completing relocation with minimal interruption to power supply.
“When executing projects of this magnitude some of the customers within the estates along the expressway corridors will experience interruptions in power supply’” said Kenya power director and CEO Bernard Ngugi.
H said the company will try to minimize blackouts by leveraging on live line technology that will see little interruptions in the affected areas.
The exercise began earlier this month and is expected to be completed in November.
It will be carried out by a team of 60 Kenya power employees and four external underground cabling contractors.
So far, the company has covered 17 kilometers of the 40 kilometers road.
The Kenya Power chairman, Mahboub Maalin said that the exercise is the most costly affair and will cost about 1 billion shillings.
KPLC said that it is carrying out this project as a business and it expects to make profits.
The chairman further said that the company has expenses to pay including paying dividends to the shareholders.
The Nairobi Expressway was launched by the president in July and it is expected to ease traffic in the capital of Kenya.
To recover the cost, Expressway road users will have to part with at least ksh 300.
