February 20, 2020 (SSNN) South Sudan’s opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar is expected to be appointed tonight by the President and to resume his position as First Vic-President, a position he held temporarily before being replaced in the aftermath of the 2016 heavy fighting in the capital, Juba.

Meanwhile, President Salva Kiir and opposition leaders have agreed to form a Transitional Government of National Unity on schedule.

Kiir confirmed that the pending pre-transitional tasks will be resolved amicably later, once the unity government is formed.

“We agreed to form the government and that pending things will be discussed within a unity government,” he said.

Kiir promised that his forces would be responsible for ensuring security in the capital, Juba, until the unified forces are fully graduated.

“I have taken this responsibility as the president. My forces will be responsible for security in Juba until the training of the unified forces is completed, and if there are still pending things, we will continue with discussions until we reach an agreement,” said President.

The latest developments have raised a glimmer of hope and prospects for peace in the country.
