May 10, 2020 (SSNN) – A traditional chief in South Sudan’s Warrap state has claimed that the South Sudan army loyal to President Salva Kiir Mayardit was forcefully recruiting youth into its file raising concerns over the government’s commitment to the revitalized peace agreement.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia from Tonj South county this morning, the traditional chief said they have been asked a week ago by the a army commander based in Kuajock to mobilize youth for conscription in the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF).

“Last week, we were told to by a commander in Kuajock to mobilize youth so that they vulantarily join the army before that action is forced on them by the soldiers,” the chief who refused to be named told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) from Tonj.

The chief explained that they were not told of why the army was recruiting at a time the parties to the revitalized peace agreement are implementing a 2018 peace deal which recruit them to stop such activities to maintain a conducive environment for peace implementation.

“We don’t know. If you ask they said is because unemployed youth will get salary. I think if that is the case, no one should be forced to have a job because by the end of last week, which is on Saturday, they gave us an ultimatum to bring the youth,” the local chief said.

“So, this is not about salary or anything else, this is something hidden that I cannot name,” he added.
