Fresh fighting in Unity state as Ruweng youth attack villages in Guit
May 18, 2020 (SSNN) – Fresh fighting has broke out in South Sudan’s Unity state after armed youth from the country’s Ruweng Administrative Area launched a surprise attack on a village in Guit county, local officials said.
Simon Bol, a local official in Guit told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) via telephone call that the fighting began in the midnight on Monday killing four innocent civilians including a woman and a child.
“There was an attack this morning at Kuerbowni Payam in Guit county. Four people were killed, two men, one woman and one child. Five people are being treated at Bentiu hospital and are in a very critical condition,” Bol said.
He said the attackers acrossed in from Pariang county where the capital of the Ruweng Administrative area is based. He accused the politicians there of ignoring the plan despite the fact that they were aware of the plans to attack Guit county.
“The attackers crossed in from Ruweng. They came from Pariang and this attack was carried out in the watchful eye of the government there. So, this is something where there is the hand of the higher authority in Ruweng,” Bol said.
The news of fighting in Unity state comes at a time when inter-communal fighting in South Sudan’s Jonglei state intensifies. The press secretary in the office of the president said on Monday that attacks on Lou-Nuer villages were revenge.
Ateny blamed the absense of a local authority there.
