Denay appointed Jonglei governor
July 15, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s minister of higher education, Denay Jock Chagor, has been relieved from his position and then appointed as the new governor of the country’s restive Jonglei state, according to a decree readout on the SSBC.
President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, who are the main principals to the peace agreement, had agreed in May for the allocation of the peace agreement.
But some disagreements over who should be appointed as governor delayed the important provision of the deal.
Machar had nominated General Johnson Olony for the governorship of Upper Nile state, but Kiir refused to appoint him saying he is a divisive figure. Kiir didn’t also appoint a governor for Jonglei as the SSOA had initially rejected the state demanding, instead, Upper Nile.
The appointment of Denay will end disagreement within the Alliance over who can take the state as Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin had nominated his secretary-general for the Jonglei state gubernatorial seat.
Ina separate decrees, Kiir appointed Gabriel Changson Chang as the minister of higher education replacing Chagor and appointed Deng Alor Kuol as the minister of Eastern African community affairs to replace John Luk Jok who died last month in Juba.
