COVID-19 cases jump to 490 after 143 more people test positive
May 20, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan coronavirus cases have jumped to 490 after 143 more people tested positive for the virus.
Until today, South Sudan had 347 cases. The ministry of health said in a statement that all the 143 new cases are South Sudanese.
The surge in cases came as President Salva Kiir said earlier this month that he was easing measures put forth by his administration to curb the spread of the virus.
Many senior government officials including the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny as well as information minister Michael Makuei Lueth have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The two men, beside minister of defense and Machar’s wife Angelina Teny, have come out publicly to announced their infection with the virus.
