May 8, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan coronavirus cases on Friday jumped to 120 following the announcement by the ministry of health this afternoon that thirty (3) more people have tested positive for the virus.

The latest development has raised fears of a rapid spread of the virus as President Salva Kiir Mayardit ordered on Thursday that measures put in place to suppress the virus be eased. Kiir’s decision has sparked anger among the medical professionals who are opposed to the lifting of the measures.

In a statement this evening, the office of the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny who is also the SPLM-IO leader and deputy chairperson of the high-level taskforce on the coronavirus, said most of the victims are South Sudanese.

“South Sudan has today confirmed 30 more cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number to 120. This was announced today during the High Level Taskforce meeting chaired by the First Vice President, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon,” the Machar office said in the statement.

“Most of the victims are South Sudanese nationals,” it added.
