BREAKING: SPLM-IO May Accept LITTLE EXTENSION of Pre-Transitional Period
October 17, 2019, Pacific Standard Time
With less than a month remaining before the South Sudanese parties form the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, South Sudan’s main rebel group may accept “little” extension of the pre-transitional period to ensure that the security arrangement is implemented in letter and spirit.
Speaking last weekend in Calgary, Canada, the Deputy Chairman of the SPLM/A(IO) said the oppositions will not form a coalition government with President Kiir’s group on November 12 but a “little extension” could bridge the remaining gap between the parties.
“The SPLM-IO may accept little extension if the SPLM-IO believes that there will be changes in line with agreement” Said Deputy Chairman, Dr. Henry Odwar Dilang.
Hon. Odwar stressed that the opposition group will not accept any blind suggestion from any body that the “rest will be discussed later after the TGNU is formed”.
“We will not form the government on November 12, 2019. The government wants to absorb us in order to maintain status quo” Odwar said.
“We would rather talk about everything right now. After the government is formed we will not get to talk about anything at all. We better do that now or never” He continued.
Odwar said the parties have made little progress in cantoning the forces and perhaps a little more extension could resolve the remaining challenges.
The world’s youngest nation, South Sudan, returned to war two years after her independence in December 2013.
Several attempts to reconcile the warring leaders have failed, however, the South Sudanese could have one more chance if the government and oppositions resolve the pending issues that include security arrangement and number of states.
