March 28, 2020(SSNN) — Latest reports from South Sudan’s main hospital, the Juba Teaching Hospital, confirmed that doctors and nurses are striking leaving patients  without medical attention.

Speaking to patients as doctors and nurses are nowhere to be seen, they believe that the doctors and nurses are striking due to lack of protective kits that would protect them from the global pandemic, COVID-19.

The strike comes at a time the South Sudan government just released a 3 million dollar package to combat the outbreak of Coronavirus but it is not clear how much of that will be spent on actual medical equipment.

Like many African countries, South Sudan received a donation of coronavirus testing kits from the Chinese billionaire Jack Ma this week, but the South Sudanese hospital did not have most of the basic equipment prior to the coronavirus outbreak.

So far all the neighbouring countries have recorded a number of confirmed cases but South Sudan has not.

The neighbouring Kenya has confirmed at least 38 cases and recorded one death from the virus, Uganda has confirmed 23 cases and Sudan has confirmed 5 cases and 1 death.

In the horn of Africa, Egypt has recorded 576 cases and 36 death as Ethiopia registers 16 cases.

South Sudan has formed a COVID-19 Task Force led by the presidency, Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar, to closely monitor the pandemic.

Airports and borders are locked down and residents are advised to stay at home but it can’t be verified whether or not these measures are holding since South Sudan Juba International Airport cleared Ethiopian Airline to land this evening.
