AU delegation urges Kiir, Machar to resolve states deadlock
May 10, 2020 (SSNN) — A high-level delegation of the African Union (AU) has urged South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, and first vice president, Dr. Riek Machar, to resolve the deadlock over the allocation of states.
This came after the parties failed to agree on the matter following months-long talks to divide states governments which would allow for the appointment of state governors.
In a statement this afternoon, Machar’s office said a delegation of the AU met the First Vice President and urged the two principals (Kiir and Machar) to find a solution to the states deadlock and form governments.
“The First Vice President, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny, today, Sunday, May 10, 2020, met with a delegation from the African Union (AU), led by Ambassador Prof. Joram Bisworo, the Head of the AU Mission in South Sudan,” Machar’s office said in the statement.
According to press release from Machar’s office by his long-term spokesman, James Gatdet, the African Union discussed issues over states allocation and formation of local governments.
“The meeting discussed the status and challenges faced in the allocation of States Governors to Parties, and general status of implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), and response to Covid-19 pandemic disease,
The AU leaders believes that local administrations will help in battling this global pandemic and therefore the South Sudan leaders should make this decision a matter of top priority
“AU urges the Parties to resolve the matter soon.” Gatdet added.
